2018 was a big year for Perth’s foodie scene – from retro arcade bars to trendy coffee joints and a Texas smokehouse, the year was a flurry of openings offering something to please all manner of tastes.
While there’s a rising popularity in services that provide an easy way to cook quick and delicious meals from the comfort of home, there’s always room for a night out with friends trying a hip new restaurant. If you haven’t had a chance to check out the latest venues yet, now is the perfect opportunity to do so. Prepare for a wild (and delicious) ride!
Harvey Leigh’s Public House
Located in Highgate, this restaurant offers a hearty, rustic range of French-inspired food options to suit families and dining enthusiasts alike. Created by Dan Wegener, a top Australian sommelier, the venue is a more casual affair than his other fine-dining alternatives. Its selection of wines is impeccable and the range of food on offer is impressive. Whether you’re after a sweet or savoury crepe, slow-cooked lamb’s shoulder or a simple steak, there’s something for everyone here.
Deus Ex Machina
The highly anticipated Deus Ex Machina hit the shores of Perth this year, offering not only the motorcycle and surf apparel that we know and love, but a café and bar, too. The venue, located in Fremantle’s old Wesley Church, is a charming, eclectic mix of the old and the new. It offers standard café fare plus a few unique drinks such as honeydew tea.
Located in Highgate, Si Paradiso offers a promising replacement to the lost Late Night Valentine. A fusion of Italian-Australian cuisine, drinks and music, this all-day, late-night venue offers retro Italian vibes for days. If you’re missing LNV’s electronic grooves, come here for your fix and enjoy some mouth-watering pizza for good measure. If you’re lucky, you might also catch some live jazz.
Frank’s Barbecue Texas Smokehouse
If you’re in the mood for one hell of a meal, this is the place to go. Frank’s Barbecue Texas Smokehouse is an authentic piece of Texas in Perth, set with an old-school diner, free soft drink refills and classic American sides. The staff members are as warm and friendly as the atmosphere here, making it a great venue for families. Go all out and order a full rack of ribs or beer can chicken – you won’t be disappointed.
Lucy’s Love Shack
The crew at Jack Rabbit Slims have opened up a grungy, late-night, live-music pizza haven in the heart of Perth’s CBD. The venue is edgy, dark, neon-lit and jamming with old school rock and roll music. Open until 5am on certain days, the Love Shack offers a near endless supply of divine, gourmet pizza, free pool and cosy booth seats that will keep you in comfort all night long.
Cocolat is a small bit of paradise located in Raine Square. This is heaven for dessert lovers, with a range of award-wining, indulgent and aesthetically-impressive delicacies showcased for your pleasure. Whether you’re after a specialty cake for a birthday, a creamy gelato pick-me-up, handmade truffles, citrus tarts or waffles, you can be sure there’s something here for you.
The Palace Arcade
Free arcade games, “cheat mode” cocktails and a near endless supply of craft beers? Yes, please. Perth’s first vintage arcade bar is a winner; featuring machines gathered from across the world and 80s aesthetics all around. They also do a mean pizza, and offer buffalo wings, mozzarella sticks and fries as an aside. Be careful – you mightn’t want to leave!
If you’re into Spanish tapas, you’ll want to check out Los Bravos. Opened by the brains behind Balthazar and No Mafia, this restaurant is a feast for the senses. The venue is decidedly Spanish, with tiles, handmade plates and tunes to match. Grab a plate of made-to-order paella, charred octopus or a vego dish for a meal that is flavoursome and absolutely divine. Pair your food with a Moritz beer or a glass of Spanish wine and you’re in heaven. For dessert, enjoy an espresso martini featuring a mini churro. You’re also welcome to bring your dog along for the ride!
Angove Kitchen & Espresso Bar
Nestled in a cosy yet modern venue in North Perth, Angove is a home away from home offering sizeable portions of smashed avo on toast, pancake stacks, burgers & chips, and a delicious smoked salmon quinoa salad. It’s a great place to catch up with friends or to enjoy your morning coffee.
With so many delicious new restaurants, cafes and bars to experience, you’re sure to be entertained all summer long. Take a break from the kitchen and invite your friends out for a night to remember.
