Sophisticated Swan Valley Dining: Oscar’s at Guildford Landing

Oscar’s at Guildford Landing is a family-run restaurant on the edge of the Swan Valley that showcases Western Australian produce, beers and wines. Operated by Justin Hughes, Tony Hughes and Drew Tennant, the venue’s atmosphere is casual and relaxed. Customers have the choice of dining inside by the wood fire or in the picturesque semi-enclosed outdoor area.

Oscar’s offers a seasonal menu suitable for sharing, with the option of ordering al a carte or tasting menus of three, four or six courses. Dietary requirements are well catered for, with many dishes gluten free, nut free and dairy free. The drinks menu offers wide range of local wines by the glass and bottle, beers on-tap and packaged, and spirits.

Chef Justin Hughes has an impressive career history, having grown up in a hospitality family and worked in the industry his entire working life. He began his chef apprenticeship in the Swan Valley before completing it at two-hatted Becasse in Sydney .

Following his apprenticeship, Justin worked for almost three years at Rockpool on George in Sydney under Neil Perry and Phil Wood.

I sampled dishes from all sections of the menu, and was impressed by the cooking of the meat, fish and accompaniments. Herbs and greens are grown on the property.

The Berkshire bacon with tomato and asparagus was beautifully presented, as was the red mullet with salt bush and cucumber. Perfect spring and summer entrees.

Oscars dry-ages its Stirling Ranges beef in-house, and serving it with a simple jus leaves nowhere to hide. Different cuts of Gwamby lamb (from a Wheatbelt property in Gwambygine) are served in the ultimate lamb sampler. The Ruby Lou mashed potato was smooth, soft and buttery; be prepared to fight over the crispy skin shards.

The market fish (red emperor) with carrot and dill is the star fish dish; the fish wing is tasty but a little tricky to eat for the uninitiated.

Dessert comes deconstructed with a twist, most notably the siphoned and blowtorched baked cheesecake.

Oscar’s is a great location for a casual lunch, special occasion dinner or a drink and a bite during a day in the Swan Valley. There’s a wide range of excellent dishes and drinks on offer, the service is friendly and the view from the garden is a delight.
