Slideshow: The Perth Food & Wine Expo

Perth Food & Wine Expo

Food & Wine Expo

I was surprised when I heard that there was going to be yet another food & wine event at the Perth Convention & Exhibition Centre, less than six months after the popular “Good Food & Wine Show” headed off into the sunset. Held over three days from October 9-11, the “Perth Food & Wine Expo” promised the usual combination of exhibits, live demonstrations and masterclasses.

I attended the show briefly on the Friday when I was invited by McDonald’s to be one of the first to try Create Your Taste Chicken, and purchased my own entry ticket on Sunday.

Perth Food & Wine ExpoNo food event can exist without celebrity in some form, and this one featured MKR’s Camilla Counsel and MasterChef’s Jessie Spiby, Georgia Barnes and Ben Milbourne (who I saw pointing to his face on a banner to prove to a security guard that he was part of the show!) All four of them conducted cooking demos throughout the festival, and Ben also held a six-course degustation with matching wines on each day for a very reasonable $90.

As you would expect there were food trucks and stalls selling plenty of different things to eat, although there was a lot less alcohol than at the Good Food & Wine Show (which suited me just fine). The expo seemed to be consistently busy, although nowhere near as frantic as the Good Food & Wine Show which I usually find hard going crowd-wise after a few hours. I stayed for much of Sunday and found that I could get near most of the exhibits most of the time. The stallholders I spoke with confirmed that it had a very different feel to other shows, and that fewer drunk people which was definitely an advantage.

I really enjoyed my time at the Food & Wine Expo – I sampled some fine food, talked to lots of stall holders, attended a “Cheese Lovers” masterclass, watched some cooking demos and even scored a photo with my favourite MasterChef contestant!

The Expo is confirmed to be returning to Perth in October 2016, and I’m already looking forward to it. If you’re interstate, it’s heading to the Gold Coast on January 22-24 and Canberra on February 19-12.

See below for some more photos from the Expo.
