Oh McHappy Day – the McRib arrives in Australia!

So the rumours were true – as part of celebrations for the forthcoming London Olympics, Australia is being treated to a range of six limited edition McDonald’s items named after previous host cities. So far we’ve had the Sydney Stack (more on this below) but today it’s the main event – the long awaited launch of the McRib in Australia. It’s branded the “Atlanta Pork McRib”, but we all know what this thing is. So down to business…

After all that anticipation, it’s not much to look at – under the hood it’s not much better.

I thought this was supposed to have pickles, but I’m not a huge fan so no bother there. The bun is lightly dusted with what looks like polenta, and is soft but a little chewy – quite nice actually. The sauce is unique – sweet and tangy, I’m sure I’ve had it before but I can’t think where. The pork “burger” tastes unmistakably of pork, but in a hard to describe way – not like sausage, not like roast pork or a chop – but by no means offensive. Shove in a few onions and you have a unique Maccas experience. Is it the best Maccas burger ever? No, but I wouldn’t say no to another one.

The Sydney Stack has a beef patty (not sure if it’s a quarter pounder, it’s certainly bigger than a Big Mac patty) with bacon, cheese, pineapple, beetroot, tomato, lettuce, cooked onions and barbecue sauce.

It may not look pretty (and it was rather messy to eat) but this is a seriously good burger, in fact one of the best McDonald’s burgers I can recall eating. Pineapple can often overpower burgers but it this case it added freshness and some much needed sweetness to take away some of that “normal” McDonald’s flavour. This is much better than the limp McOz that people seem to love, and I think it should be added to the menu on a permanent basis.

The McRib is only available from May 23 to June 5, so you’d better get in quick…I wonder how well they freeze?

  • So far so good ronald. McRib, delicious. Barcelona omelette, really good. Sydney stack, good, cos it tastes like a chip shop burer not a maccas one.

  • Mc Rib was good- bun was tiny and not very filling but tasted really good. REminded me of meatlovers pizza- the meat and the BBQ sauce gave it that taste.
