News: Young guns take over Morries in Margaret River

Under new ownership, Morries in Margaret River will continue to offer the same friendly atmosphere, great bites and amazing cocktails.

On February 01, Dave Astbury who has been an owner of Morries for four years, hands over the keys to Front of House Manager Petra Ek and her partner and chef Dean Hulston, the venue’s new owner operators.

Hulston, 27, a born and bred Margaret River local said the opportunity to buy Morries was too good to pass up.

“Petra and I have both worked in hospitality extensively both abroad and in Australia, and we’ve both worked at Morries throughout its nine-year history – it’s a venue that we’ve loved to enjoy for a long time as employees and as customers,” Hulston said.

“We love the atmosphere at Morries, it lends itself to something that isn’t overly common in a small regional town like Margs – a little slice of something you’d usually find in city – a small venue, consistently pumping and energetic.

“We’re not looking to change anything too drastically, our focus is to continue to uphold the quality and reputation that Morries has while putting our own impression on the venue and menu.”

This is Hulston’s and Ek’s first foray into business management, so with that comes a learning curve that they’ve both embraced.

Astbury won’t be going far and will remain in the background as a mentor to Ek and Hulston for the next 12 months to ensure their success as they settle in.

Morries attracts locals and visitors thanks to its central location overlooking Reuther Park, the mix of being a café, bar and restaurant, and being the perfect place for a quick catch up over a drink, a lingering long lunch, a special occasion dinner or just because you don’t want to cook, coffee, cocktails, as well as an option for late night bar snacks.

“Owning Morries has been a challenging and exciting era for me. With the local community support and the hard work from my team, we’ve created and maintained an epic venue – I want to thank everyone for the role they had to play in its success,” said Astbury.

“I’m leaving Morries in a good place and in very capable hands. Petra and Dean are energetic, enthusiastic and experienced, a formidable duo and I’m sure they’ll do well.”
