When running your own catering business, you will realise pretty early on that you will need helping hands in order for things to take off properly. You can’t expect to do everything yourself – no matter how good you are at cooking and preparing food – there is so much more that goes into running a business. There is the marketing to take care of, the sales, the customer service, the accounting, and those things are just as important as how good the food tastes.

But if you’ve never done anything like this before, how do you go about hiring employees? There are many things that you need to look for to ensure you are doing everything the right way, and finding the best people to work and carry your business to success. It may be hard at the beginning – the idea of having to share things with strangers, but this is all just part of the industry, and the sooner you know that, the sooner you will be successful.

So what do you need to do?

The finances

Remember that when you get a group of employees – they need to be paid. And that will all come out of your earnings, so you need to make sure that you have enough money before choosing who is going to work for you. If you don’t yet have the appropriate finances, then you should consider emergency loans with cigno. You will be able to take out a loan very quickly without having to worry about the process of having your accounts looked at under the microscope. You can then decide on a number, and have it in your bank account that very same day. You will first need to work out how much you will need, so make a plan of how many employees you require, and how you will go about paying them, whether it will be hourly or not. This will take a bit of mathematics to do yourself, but if that feels like too much work you can seek the help of a financial advisor to answer any questions you may have.

The advert

Once you know what you are looking for you will need to put out various adverts so that your vacancies can be filled. We once used to look through the back of newspapers or in shop windows to find jobs, but nowadays everything is done online. You can find many different websites that will allow you to post ads so have a look what is available to you. Sometimes you can do it for free, other times there will be a small fee in order to use their platform, but this is generally nothing but a few pennies. Make sure that your ad title is very clear and to the point so that people can understand exactly what the role is off the bat. The make the description short enough that it doesn’t become overwhelming to read, but with enough detail so that people can be enticed into wanting to know more. That’s when you end the ad by telling them how to get in touch. You may have an application form for them to fill out, or just a CV attached to an email may suffice.

The interview

This is something that is nerve racking not only for your potential employee, but for you too. You’re meeting with someone who is trying out for a job to work for your very own business – this is a little scary because it’s so real. Things are starting to happen, and you’re the one in charge of it all. One thing to remember is that they’re most likely a lot more scared than you are – like spiders. You are the professional in control. It’s a good idea to plan questions ahead of time that you will ask all of the potential employees, that way you can see how differently people will respond to the same question. You also want to think about personality too though. For example, if you had two people applying for the same job that had the exact same experience and qualifications, but one of them way funny and charismatic, while the other seemed moody and cold – who would you choose? It’s okay to be a little informal at times in order to get a real sense of a person.

The background check

Once you have an idea of who you would like to work for you, it is important that you always do a last little background check so that you have a final confirmation that they are the right one to carry your business. One very easy way to do this is through social media. If for any reason you find someone that has everything on paper, but you still don’t feel completely sold – having a little browse on their profile (if it’s public) is a brilliant way to see who someone really is. You may find that they are still as pleasant as they seemed at the interview, or you may come across some unpleasant values and comments that you don’t think are acceptable, especially not when it comes to them representing you as a business. It’s also a good idea to follow up on any references that they have given you so you know what their previous employer thought of them, and more importantly – why they are no longer working there.

And there you have it, those are the basics that you need when thinking about hiring employees. One of the best rules to follow though, is your gut. If for some reason you have a feeling inside that doesn’t sit well, then you may really benefit from listening to it. But as long as you have your head screwed on right, paired up with some common sense, there is no reason that you shouldn’t be able to find the best employees who will fit perfectly into your business. Remember, the more help you have, the more you can get done.
