An Express Lunch at Post, Perth CBD

Post Perth

Today I had a quick catch-up lunch with my friends and fellow food bloggers Lily and Val at Post in the Perth CBD, where we each tried a dish from the Express Lunch menu.

Post PerthToday I had a quick catch-up lunch with my friends and fellow food bloggers Lily and Val at Post in the Perth CBD. Post is located in the State Buildings and is the official dining room of COMO The Treasury, but is also open to the public. Post is so named because it is situated in the franking room of the original General Post Office.

As you can see, the dining room is quite sophisticated and the level of service was well matched, but still friendly. The tap water is available in sparkling, if that excites you.

Our booking was at 12 noon and, as we only had an hour, ordered from the Express Lunch menu which is available Monday to Thursday and features four main courses ($28 each).

Post PerthThe complimentary Bread – admittedly rather nice bread – was served in a bag.

Post PerthI ordered the dry aged Wagyu beef burger with pancetta, cheddar, tomato relish and pickles. I asked for it to be cooked medium, although it arrived quite medium-well, and was a little tough. Wagyu seems an odd choice for a burger…and there wasn’t any pancetta in it either. The fries were okay, although they were nearly gone by the time the ketchup & aioli arrived.

This would have been a passable but average burger anywhere else, but at $28 it was quite a disappointment.

Post PerthLily ordered the linguini with crab, garlic, chilli, zucchini and basil, which she felt was perfectly cooked but needed seasoning.

Post PerthVal scored the dish of the day with this beautiful bowl of chilled raw kingfish, wakame, cucumber & avocado salad with spiced tamari soy dressing. Note the generous amount of avocado…

The Express menu dish that we didn’t order was Rangers Valley flank steak with Cafe de Paris butter and watercress. Sides are also available for $12 each: chips with malt aioli, honey glazed carrots with goats curd, toasted barley & sesame and radicchio leaves with fennel, grapefruit and Chardonnay vinaigrette. The “standard” (slow?) lunch menu available includes a selection of entrees ($22-$26), mains ($32-$44), sides ($12) and desserts ($18-$24 for a cheese board).

So a mixed bag here – good service and a nice location but a disappointing burger. On the plus side, we were finished before 1pm and individual payment was no issue, so Post is definitely worth considering for a quick business lunch, as long as you don’t mind the limited menu.
