My answer to the question of best burger in Perth is easy: Short Order Burger Co. Usually found lurking in The Mantle at the East end of Freo, the occasions where they venture outwards are always worth a look.

Short Order Burger Co teamed up with the equally-excellent campus cafe Grindhouse to celebrate International Burger Day on Saturday with a tribute to the classic Whopper: the WAAPA with cheese, cunningly named after the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts (which also lives at ECU in Mount Lawley).

Available for a very limited four hours, we took no chances and arrived shortly after 10am to find the event in full swing and burgers-for-brunch everywhere. A short fire-alarm delay added to the anticipation, but we eventually received our burgers and…well…the pictures can speak for themselves.

If you’re in Perth and haven’t tried Short Order Burger Co yet, you should be ashamed. Wherever you are, it’s worth the journey. Check out their Facebook page for more info.

The WAAPA with cheese. Yes, it tasted like a Whopper – just a thousand times better.

A BBQ bacon cheeseburger.

A double BBQ bacon cheeseburger.

Mac and cheese loaded fries. Just because.

My caramel milkshake was excellent – good flavour, not too thick and cold.

Don’t panic, this is a University.

The menu, just so you know what you missed.

Until next year…
