Breakfast review: West End Deli, West Perth


West End Deli is an unassuming, small restaurant tucked away on leafy Carr Street in West Perth – if you didn’t know it was there, you’d probably drive past without giving it a second glance. It’s been around since 2008 so there are plenty of people who do know about it, and it’s recently become one of my favourite breakfast destinations.


The coffee is always excellent, and I find it hard to stop at one. I’ve noticed that drinks can take a while to arrive when it’s busy – last time we were there for lunch our coffees arrived long after our food.

You can see the current brunch menu here, which includes all manner of breakfast and lunch goodies too long to list so I encourage you to take a look. I hear the house made crumpets with honeycomb & honey vanilla parfait are awesome but I haven’t tried them yet.


On my last visit I ordered the pork & mushroom croquettes with smoked creamed corn and a fried egg ($18). This was absolutely delicious, pork for breakfast was a real treat and the amount of  smoke in the corn was perfect. The croquettes were substantial, although I ordered some toast on the side for some crunch / to mop up the juices / because I could.


The first time I went there for breakfast, I ordered eggs on toast with a “slab” of bacon, and they were the best scrambled eggs I’ve had in a long time. There’s not too many places in Perth you can get bacon served like this – cooked properly, I should add. Eggs are available slow-cooked as well as in the usual ways, with sides such as marinated cherry tomatoes & goats cheese ($6), mushroom terrine & blue cheese butter ($6) and black bean & pork rib cassoulet with sour cream & chives ($6).


If you’re ever there for lunch, I can thoroughly recommend the pulled pork baguette with apricot chutney, mayonnaise & salad leaves ($11) – I can’t remember eating a better sandwich, and it was only some stern words from Renay that stopped me ordering a second. Other lunch items include this roasted pumpkin, onion & goat’s cheese tart ($14), ricotta gnocchi with sage, candied olives & artichokes ($19), pork belly with scallops, apple, celery & ginger jus ($27) and black angus scotch fillet steak sandwich with mushroom ketchup & onion rings ($22).

West End Deli is open from 7am to 3pm Tuesday to Sunday, and also for dinner Wednesday to Saturday. Check out the current dinner menu here, which includes some interesting items such as slow cooked egg with peas, bacon, truffle oil & white anchovies ($19) for entree and ballantine of oxtail with marron, celeriac puree & parsley salad for main course ($38).

We’ve been to West End Deli for breakfast and lunch a few times now and every time I wonder why we don’t go there more often. The food and coffee is outstanding and reasonably priced, although it can be busy so choose your timing carefully. I love that it’s open from 7am, and early Saturday morning is my favourite time to sneak in while it’s still quiet. Highly recommended.
