Anyone who follows me on Instagram knows how much I love Woodfire Italian Restaurant in Ellenbrook. I consider myself lucky that it’s my “local”, as it serves some of the best Italian food in Perth. Chef and owner Lorenzo Schiaffini is a master in the kitchen, and learnt his trade in restaurants such as London’s famous River Cafe before working with Jamie Oliver to open restaurants across the globe, including the Perth branch of Jamie’s Italian. He now runs his own restaurant with wife Amanda, and if you think Ellenbrook is too far to venture for a meal – you’re wrong.
I’ll focus on the “normal” Woodfire menu another time, but this post is about a collaboration dinner held last week between Woodfire and Swan Valley boutique winery Little Black Dog Wines. Featuring a traditional shared table menu just like Lorenzo’s Nonna would have cooked for the family back in Italy, each course was served with a glass of carefully-paired wine.
Starting with a glass of Little Black Dog Sparkling Chenin Blanc, entree included a selection of seafood dishes, as well as some deep fried duck & mushroom ravioli and Woodfire’s popular panfrittos (deep fried pizza dough!) for the non-seafood eaters. Paired with 2011 Little Black Dog Chardonnay, the entrees were:
- Antipasto di mare: Nonno Roberto’s stuffed Spencer Gulf mussels
- Fremantle octopus salame with Jingilli extra virgin olive oil and crispy Sicilian capers
- Fritto misto of sustainably caught West Coast seafoods with Swan Valley lemon mayo
- Marinated Ora King salmon and Fremantle swordfish with pink peppercorn dressing
- Risotto ai funghi: wild mushrooms and Manjimup truffle risotto, with Pepe Saja cultured butter and 36 months aged Parmigiano Reggiano and paired with 2011 Little Black Dog Malbec. Arguably the highlight of the night, the risotto was served from a hollowed-out cheese wheel, and smothered with shavings of fresh truffle…
- Ossobuco d’agnello: slow braised Amelia Park lamb ossobucco served on stone milled white polenta and parlsey gremolata, paired with 2011 Little Black Dog Shiraz.
Dessert was beautifully light, and unlike anything I’ve eaten before:
- Crostata di Ricotta e cioccolato: warm buffalo ricotta and Amadei dark chocolate tart served with Swan Valley cinnamon honey, paired with a simply divine 2013 Little Black Dog Sweet Chardonnay Verdelho.
As you would expect from an Italian family-inspired feast, there was enough food to feed everyone twice over and it’s safe to say that no-one went home hungry. Tickets for the event were only $60 including wine, and Woodfire will be holding similar events in future so keep an eye on its Facebook page for details. In the meantime, you really should visit Woodfire for dinner or one of their $15 lunch specials.
