A delightful pre-Christmas dinner at La Veen

La Veen

Regular readers will know that I’m a big fan of La Veen on the corner of King & Wellington in Perth city. Even though it’s my work day “local” cafe, their commitment to providing some of the best coffee, food and service in Perth is what always takes me back.

Offering dinner service has been on their agenda for some time now, and Renay and I were thrilled to be invited to one of their two pre-Christmas dinner events last weekend.

The menu, with a good selection of items to choose from.

Renay chose the beetroot carpaccio for entree, which looked stunning and didn’t disappoint. Every ingredient shone through, whilst coming together as a beautifully balanced dish.

My entree was the grilled quail with water cress, onion, walnuts and semi-dried heirloom tomatoes. This wasn’t the kind of dish I would usually order, but really enjoyed it. Another well balanced plate.

Onto main course, and the standout dish of the night: the beef cheeks with gnocchi, mirepoix veg, red wine jus and chard. Wow.

Just a bowl of the flavoursome broth and the gnocchi would have been good enough – add the softest beef cheek you’ve ever eaten and this was an absolute delight.

Of course there was dessert to finish, and the apple crumble with biscuit topping, vanilla ice cream and anglaise was on-par with any other La Veen dessert – not overly sweet, and not too heavy either.

They even produce a mighty fine Christmas tree…

As I write this, La Veen have closed for a well earned break over the holiday period and they open again on the 7th of January. If you haven’t been there – for some unknown reason – you really should make a point of getting there in the New Year. Fingers crossed that it’s not long before they open for dinner a little more regularly…

Merry Christmas everyone!
