Now in its 19th year, the Australian Grand Dairy Awards recognise and reward Australia’s top dairy producers across 18 product categories. In a rigorous judging process, 22 dairy experts sampled hundreds of gold medal winning products to crown their champions.
A range of products including flavoursome cheeses, sensational ice creams, luscious milks and velvety yoghurts were assessed for flavour, aroma, texture, body and appearance.

The Cream of the Crop
The coveted list of champions includes dairy producers big and small. Melbourne’s Montefiore Cheese won over the judges, with the cheesemaker taking out the 2018 Grand Champion Cheese with its soft and sweet Ovoline.
The 2018 Grand Champion Dairy Product was scooped up by Sydney based Pure Gelato for its Salted Pistachio Gelato, which the judges commended for its superb texture and rich pistachio flavour accentuated by a hint of salt. The awards consumer judging panel agreed, voting this gelato as their pick of the bunch.
For the second year running the Australian public were also invited to vote for their favourite Australian dairy product in the People’s Choice Award. 13,179 votes were cast to reveal The Yoghurt Shop’s Passionately Passionfruit Yoghurt as the 2018 People’s Choice Award winner.
Tasting the Champions
I was sent samples of four champion products to taste for myself, and it was clear that each award was well deserved.
Mundella Greek Honey Yoghurt
This outstanding yoghurt has a great balance of honey supported by good acid development and a superbly creamy texture.
Berrys Creek Riverine Blue
This is a superb buffalo milk cheese from a top-class cheese maker. While delicate and creamy, this blue delivers on robust blue flavours that linger pleasantly on the palate. This is a cheese suitable for everyday eating but wouldn’t be out of place at any special occasion.
King Island Dairy Discovery Ash Brie 175g
The texture of this cheese was just perfect – smooth, creamy and just gooey enough to coat the palate with earthy sweet flavours, and complimented by a soft ash rind.
Mil Lel Superior Parmesan
This typically fruity flavoured cheese has all the characteristics of a well-made Parmesan aged for around 3 years. The dry crumbly texture is perfect for this hard grating style. A truly fantastic Parmesan.
