Working down my near-endless list of Perth cafes to visit, I arrived at Rise & Grind Espresso Bar on Scarborough Beach Road in Doubleview early this morning just after 7:30am, and had my pick of the tables.
Checking out the menu, I thought it was on the expensive side. I quite fancied the feta scrambled eggs with spinach and pistachio dukkah, but at $22 with bacon wasn’t that keen. Half an avocado isn’t something I’d normally expect on a full breakfast, either…
I eventually decided on the brioche French toast with fruit sorbet, walnuts and salted caramel sauce which had no price listed on the menu, but I think was $16.50.
This was a very attractive – and Instagram friendly – plate with beautifully soft French toast and a surprisingly generous serving of walnuts. I would rather have had something creamy other than the sorbet, but that’s just personal taste and I must say that the dish as a whole was delicious.
Unfortunately my coffee – beans from Pound Roastery in O’Connor – was very average, not strong enough and the milk was too thin.
I think I arrived just before the main barista did, and really expected better from somewhere with “Espresso Bar” in the name.
It’s great to see a cafe with a sense of humour – the “Loaded Shakes” sound great at $10, and I was very tempted by the “Type II” chocolate shake at $12, but that’s a bit too much – even for me – at breakfast time!
Hopefully the coffee was a one-off because I was so early – thankfully the food was good enough to warrant a return visit. Worth a try, as long as the menu appeals.
