Fast Food Review: KFC Black Edition Kentucky Burger

black2

I don’t eat KFC very often – the thought of having a hot flush while being served by Joel Madden in a drive through doesn’t do much for my appetite – but when I do, my meal of choice is a Zinger with bacon and cheese. KFC’s latest offering, the new “Black Edition Kentucky Burger”, raises the stakes by adding “bourbon flavoured” bbq sauce and two of my favourite things – coleslaw and crispy fried onion.

The real burger was much smaller than promised, but that’s to be expected. So how did it eat? Disappointingly. The sauce was way too strong and doesn’t taste of bourbon, the regular KFC coleslaw was also very strong and there just weren’t enough of the maggoty-looking fried onions. I think the cheese was some kind of swiss, more melty but less flavoursome than the usual burger cheese. At the end I found my mouth desperately longing for the mayo from a Zinger to take the taste of the sauce and coleslaw away.

I’m guessing this is a (very) limited edition burger as it doesn’t even rate a mention on the main KFC website. It’s worth a try if you’re curious but I won’t be going back for another.

2013 Araluen Fremantle Chilli Festival

Yes, Perth foodies, this weekend signalled time to unpack the chilli spoon and head to the Fremantle Esplanade for the annual Araluen Chilli Festival. This festival is getting bigger every year, and is a definite must on the tasting calendar.

We arrived just before the opening time of 10am on Sunday, and found a fairly large crowd already starting to form. Thankfully the weather was overcast and not too hot, better than the much hotter and humid day yesterday. On entering, it was obvious that there has been a layout change from previous years and the provision of extra shade was the most obvious addition.

There seemed to be a few new product stalls in amongst the usual suspects, and a substantial increase in the number of places to buy food to eat which was great. I didn’t buy much to take home this year – ok, I couldn’t resist the jaffa chilli fudge – and the best thing I ate was some chilli potatoes from Chef Nimrod Kazoom. Until next year…

Here they come: Macca’s Tastes of America

macusa1

Get ready folks, it’s time for Australia to finally get a McDonald’s “Tastes of America” promotion. Hmm, none of these burgers look very adventurous and / or interesting. Where’s the Idaho burger with a potato hash brown, Broadway Burger with mustard & cream cheese sauces or Manhattan burger with pastrami and mozzarella?

macusa2

Now if these are good, they’ll be going down in $20 portions…they’d better have more chilli than that awful breakfast omelette thing. Already worried about plastic (cheese) burns to the face.

macusa3

The “brekkie roll” doesn’t look very appetising – onions for breakfast doesn’t excite me, not to mention fillings twice the size of the bun – but the shake is a definite must. Waffle cones…meh.

This promotion is due to hit as early as next week – stay tuned for the definitive reviews on these new items! Let me know what you think when you try them.

Domino’s Pizza India gets REALLY crazy

india

Okay folks, it’s time to stop jumping on the crazy pizza bandwagon. Domino’s India brings us the “Cheesy Boloroni” pizza, which features macaroni on top of a vegetarian bolognese sauce (hence “boloroni”), some probably-not-artisan “barbeque flavoured liquid cheese”, and then adds toppings if you still have an appetite. Whatever will be next?

All the way back from 1969 – looks more honest than today’s burger photos.

Quick Breakfast Review: Cafe Mulberries, Morley

mulberr1-crop

I’ve struggled to find somewhere decent to have breakfast around Morley Galleria, Dome is the best of a bad bunch inside – don’t ever, EVER, have breakfast at the Coffee Club – and the offerings at Coventry Village are improving but still a bit dubious. That being said, I was pleasantly surprised to learn of the existence of Cafe Mulberries, located in a group of shops on Progress Street right next to the Galleria.

I had a day off from work today (Friday) and decided to visit Cafe Mulberries for breakfast. Their breakfast menu is quite comprehensive but not at all fussy, so there should be something for everyone. I’d encourage you to look at their surprisingly decent website, which includes photos and other information as well as the breakfast and lunch menus.

mulberr_coffee-crop

The Cafe was quite busy when I arrived at about 8:30am, and most of the people there were waiting for coffee so I had high hopes. Unfortunately, my cappuccino couldn’t be described as anything better than average.

Wow. I ordered the “Farmhouse Breakfast” ($17.50) with scrambled eggs (I saw others with poached eggs and they looked a bit rough) and extra baked beans ($3). There was certainly nothing to complain about with the serving size! There was a generous amount of everything (well, a second hash brown would have been nice but that’s just being greedy). There was two pieces of thick toast under the huge mound of egg which was a nice change. I like scrambled egg in that solid but soft & buttery form, although it was underseasoned and didn’t taste of much. Either the beans or sausage tasted mildly of curry, I couldn’t work out which but it wasn’t overly unpleasant.

Cafe Mulberries is open from 6am to 4pm Monday to Saturday and 7am to 3pm on Sunday, which gets many brownie points in my book; I can’t think of anywhere else I can get a decent breakfast at 6am (and don’t even think of suggesting Fast Eddy’s). Service was friendly and quick, the coffee was disappointing but the food was good, and given the serving size and overall experience I can’t really find anything to complain about and will definitely be going back. Recommended.

So wrong: 7-Eleven Blueberry Pancake Sausage

This looks wrong in more ways than one. If you’re lucky enough to be in the USA this monstrosity will cost you a mere $1.49.

More Macca’s International Madness

McD_Germany_McCurrywurst2

So what’s new on Macca’s overseas menus this week? Burger Business reports that McDonald’s Germany is offering McCurrywurst, a mix of pork bratwurst chunks in spicy tomato sauce accompanied by a shaker of mild or “sharp” curry powder. Sausages and curry can go well together, but I’m not sure about this one.

mcgerm

Also in Germany we have this curious BBQ Pork McMuffin, with “muffin, pork preparation, lettuce, cheese preparation, sliced tomatoes, smoky BBQ sauce” according to the Google translator. Why curious? This is a breakfast item! Mmm…all the preparations…

mcdonalds-turkey

Speaking of breakfast, Foodbeast reports that McDonald’s Turkey is selling a “Turkish Breakfast Menu” item with cucumber, olive, tomatoes, feta, cheese, an omelette and an English McMuffin. Hmm. This is no Massive McMuffin.

mcturk2

Also in Turkey you can get hotcakes, which look like they come with some kind of plastic slime sticky toy and a selection of barbecue sauces.

Triple Triple Cheeseburger From Jake’s Wayback Burgers

151-crop

Yes, this is a real burger from USA chain Jake’s Wayback Burgers - nine patties and nine slices of cheese totalling a massive 5,100 calories, available for a very reasonable US$12.99 (about AU$12.50). Apparently during its one month test-run a customer ate one in two minutes! The salad looks a little redundant if you ask me…

My favourite place: Piccos Kitchen, Maylands

piccos_val-crop

As regular readers will know, I like to try new places and only return to a restaurant when there’s something on offer that I can’t get anywhere else. With this in mind, it took me somewhat by surprise when we discovered Piccos Kitchen in Maylands last year, as the food and service has taken us back there time after time for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

Located somewhat unglamorously between a laundromat and a deli, Piccos would best be described as an “intimate” restauarant, and there’s seating for around 30 including a few tables outside. On entering, you will be warmly greeted by Marissa or one of her staff, who have somehow been trained to always provide the perfect level of attentiveness. Piccos is one of those rare places where they actually do want to get to know you, and make the effort to remember your name.

piccos_menu-crop

We usually go to Piccos for breakfast but our most recent visit was for Valentine’s Day dinner, where Chef Adam created a special five course menu with enough choices to satisfy most diners. The restaurant was specially re-arranged to accomodate couples, and there were about 15 tables. Each diner received a rolled-up copy of the evening’s menu tied with a ribbon, a simple touch but one that demonstrates the care taken.

piccos_brie-crop

Every course was as good as the last – with the last being a perfect, oozing chocolate fondant – and it’s a shame that it was too dark to take photos without a flash for most of the evening. You can see plenty of pictures on their Facebook page, and the photo above is of my baked brie (how did they know that baked cheese is one of my most favourite things?) Most amazingly, this meal cost a mere $75 per head for five courses. We left with no doubt that they can’t be in this for the money – passion and care is well and truly on show.

piccos_coffee-crop

I could go on about how good the breakfasts are (great coffee, the bacon egg & brie butty, the best scrambled eggs in town – when they’re on the menu HINT HINT) or the amazing pate and terrines from their popular Poach Pear range, but I’ll let you experience them for yourself. I don’t have many photos to show, that’s because when there I’m too busy enjoying myself. There are plenty of photos and sample menus to see on Facebook and Urbanspoon.

piccos_eggs-crop

Piccos is open for breakfast 7 days a week and dinner on Thursday and Friday only – I’d suggest making a booking as tables go fast. The dinner menus change every day, and usually include a range of pasta, fish, meat and vegetarian dishes at around $25-$35. The counter fridge is always well stocked with pies, sandwiches, salads etc and you will come face to face with a tempting selection of gourmet cakes & tarts.  There’s also a thoughtful kids menu, so don’t be afraid to take the family.

As the title says, Piccos is my favourite place, and it’s been one of those “secrets” that you want to tell everyone about but at the same time desperately want to keep to yourself – hence why I haven’t reviewed it until now. Piccos Kitchen receives my highest recommendation.
