Our last stop on the way back to Perth from Margaret River was lunch at Swings & Roundabouts, a local winery with a reputation for producing fine wood-fired pizzas. Much like the other days of our holiday it was raining, and sitting undercover for a while with some good food & wine seemed like a great idea before the drive home.
Renay bought a bottle of their chenin blanc – most of which disappeared over lunch – although I was driving home so stayed quite boringly sober. If you’re wondering where the name “Swings & Roundabouts” comes from, you can read about it here…kind of.
As well as pizzas, there is a large selection of gourmet items from around the region available for purchase – and even items from Perth’s own Poach Pear – which you can eat on the premises using their plates & cutlery.
The staff will even arrange the items you buy on a platter for a very reasonable $2.
There’s plenty of space to sit and watch the world go by while you enjoy your pizza. There was no-one else around so we grabbed the comfy couches in the corner and settled in to watch the rain.
Of course we had come for the wood-fired goods, and Renay chose the bruschetta ($7). This was pretty standard as bruschetta goes but was still very nice, with the freshness of the ingredients really shining through.
The pizza menu is fairly simple but there should be something to please everyone. You can see the full menu here. My choice was the Diavola, with mozzarella, cacciatore, onion, olives & chilli ($24 – this one with no olives). The crust was very good and there was just enough of each topping – like the bruschetta you could tell how fresh everything was. There was just a hint of chilli, but for once I don’t think too much heat would have been appropriate. When you eat a pizza like this you realise how bad most of the pizza you eat really is.
Swings & Roundabouts is open every day from 10am to 5pm, with the pizza oven firing up at noon and kids & dogs are welcome. If you’re in the region and fancy some decent pizza, Swings & Roundabouts is recommended for a visit.
