Macca’s brings chicken to Create Your Taste!

I liked McDonald’s Create Your Taste when it was introduced earlier this year, and had several good experiences in the launch store. I did wonder at the time whether the quality would remain consistent once it was rolled out to “regular” stores, and I must admit that I’ve had some varied experiences since it hit the mainstream. Now that the nationwide roll-out of CYT is well and truly underway, it’s time for the logical next step: chicken. I was invited to sample the new chicken range at this weekend’s Perth Food & Wine Expo, ahead of the nationwide launch on October 21st. Macca’s have built a rather impressive 40-foot long food truck that is being toured around Australia, and it certainly made its presence felt at the Expo. Chicken was on the menu for Friday only, with the standard beef option being served for the rest of the weekend. But wait, there’s more! As well as adding chicken to…

Fast food review: KFC Fold-Its

Hmm, it’s time for another KFC limited time offering – the awkwardly named “Fold-its”. There are two varieties: “Succulent Original Recipe Fillet, fresh mixed salad, diced tomato and pepper mayo” and “Succulent Zinger Fillet, fresh crunchy salad, taco seasoned tomato and sour cream mayo”, both wrapped in “soft fluffy flatbread”. “Succulent” and “fluffy” aren’t two words that usually spring to mind with your average takeaway, so let’s see what the reality is… At least they went to the effort to print some custom paper. Predictably, I went for the Zinger version. It looked a bit rough when it was unwrapped, but was reasonably easy to adjust into a more even shape – the contents are still too big for the bread, however, which you would think they could avoid at the design stage. The custom thinner-than-a-burger “fillet” had clearly been cut, presumably in half. I didn’t find the chicken as…

Quite possibly the best thing that’s ever been in my mouth…

…the bbq bacon cheeseburger from Short Order Burger Co in Fremantle. So glad I finally made it there all the way from Ellenbrook! It’s a bit of a struggle to find, and hidden inside an “activity hub” (building) called The Mantle which houses a few other restaurants (and a ping pong table). They’re open Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights from 6pm until sold out – make no mistake, these are some of the best burgers you’re ever going to eat, and well worth traveling for.

Great burgers and milkshakes at Missy Moos Gourmet Burger Bar, Mount Hawthorn

If you’re enjoying the rise of quality burgers in Perth at the moment as much as I am (and my waistline isn’t), here’s another purveyor of such goods to add to your list – Missy Moos Gourmet Burger Bar in Mount Hawthorn. It’s located in the relatively classy “The Mezz” shopping centre, and they also have a restaurant in South Fremantle. Missy Moos looks much like many other suburban fast-food restaurants at first glance, until you examine the nursery-rhyme themed menu…and then see the food being brought out. It becomes clear very quickly that this is not your average burger joint. Here’s the burger menu, to save me explaining it. There’s plenty of variety, and the “mini burgers” are a nice touch (there’s also a kids menu, if that doesn’t suit). Gluten free buns are also available, as you can see. Of course it’s not just quality burgers hitting Perth in a big way, it’s hardcore milkshakes too. This caramel one (a ridiculously cheap $6) had fresh…

A quick lunch at The Local Shack, Perth CBD

My workmate Andrew and I have tried most of the lunch destinations around our work area over the last few months (near Perth Arena), including some decent burgers at East Village, Ribs & Burgers and Old Faithful. I had a decent breakfast at The Local Shack a few months ago, so we decided to try lunch at their Perth restaurant, which is conveniently close to our office. We had both had a particularly rough morning at work, and were tempted to order one of the “adult” milkshakes – the “Flick the Bean” ($15) has Vanilla ice cream, espresso vodka and dark rum. Unfortunately I had an afternoon meeting which I didn’t want to attend “under the influence” so we ordered boring old normal shakes – me caramel, Andrew strawberry. They were both quite decent, with plenty of flavour and fresh cream on top. My only real complaint was that they…

A quick burger (or two) at East Village, Perth

East Village is a new American-style diner located in the restaurant maze that is “140”, otherwise known as 140 William Street, in the Perth CBD. It’s open seven days a week from 7am for breakfast, lunch & dinner, and celebrates classic New York food such as pizzas, cheeseburgers and waffles. The first thing to be aware of with East Village is that it’s very busy. We tried to go there a few weeks ago but there was a long wait for tables and couldn’t indulge that during our lunch break. We went back early last Friday (well before noon) and it was already busy but managed to grab one of the last few tables. I already knew what I was going to order – the New York Cheeseburger ($21) with a 180gm patty, home-made relish, pickles, diced onion, cheese, mustard mayo & a serving of rather-good chips. No messing around with salad here. This was a really good burger, the…
