Fast food fail: Macca’s Loaded Fries

Although I can appreciate a truly good chip as much as the next man, I’m not the biggest fan of fries – especially the fast-food variety. I can, however, be tempted by “loaded” fries, which are a great way to bury some dodgy spuds under lashings of chilli, much in the way the horrors of cauliflower can be hidden under large dollops of gloopy cheese sauce. I was surprised to see Macca’s announce the release of loaded fries this week, in “guacamole and salsa” and “bacon & cheese sauce” varieties and wasn’t expecting much, but decided to try the bacon & cheese version. I was right not to expect much. To start with, the box had been put into the bag on its side which wasn’t a great start, but shouldn’t affect the taste. Unfortunately, they looked and tasted like someone had emptied a salty ash tray on top of…

Back to Johnny’s Burger Joint, Canning Vale

I first went to Johnny’s Burger Joint twelve months ago, and we returned this weekend to once again celebrate my Mother’s birthday. We arrived early at 11:30 to find it empty, but it wasn’t long before the customers started streaming in and the restaurant was practically full by the time we left. The menu has something for everybody – beef, chicken, hot dogs, chips, onion rings, milkshakes… you get the picture. We tried all of these between us today, and no-one was disappointed. The service is friendly, the food comes out quickly and the pricing is very reasonable – what more could you ask for? Check out the full menu on their Facebook Page. Onion rings ($6.90). Light and crispy, but could use something to dip them in. A variety of sauces are available for $1.50 each. Really nice waffle fries ($7.90). Apart from boring “standard” fries ($6.90), you can also…

A quick lunch at Five Bar, Mt Lawley – UPDATED!

Five Bar in Mt Lawley is one of those places that has been on my list of must-visit destinations for ages, but I’ve just never managed to get there. I finally had an excuse to escape work and head there for lunch recently to meet the lovely Grace from Zomato. The food menu changes daily, and you can download a sample one here. The Reuben sandwich is one of their standard items, and I’ve seen some great photos / comments about it on social media. Some of the bar snacks also sound pretty good, such as the popcorn chicken with smoky chipotle ($12). Five Bar opens from midday every day except for Sunday when it opens at 10am. I arrived not long after midday, and found it surprisingly empty (although it was a Tuesday). There was only one person serving (and making the coffee!) although he was very friendly and seemed to…

Fast food news: McDonald’s has a grey burger now…

Just when you were getting used to black burger buns, McDonald’s China has taken things one step further (or backwards, perhaps) with the launch of this depressing-looking grey burger. Called the “Modern Chinese Burger”, it features two pork patties, iceberg lettuce, bacon and some kind of “yellow dressing”. The dreary grey buns are topped with black sesame. https://instagram.com/p/8BD1E-xBcm Mmm…looks tasty. (via Foodbeast and Mashable)
