Hot Dogs Unleashed at Run Amuk, Fremantle
It feels like I’m one of the last “foodies” in Perth to visit Run Amuk in Fremantle – this is even more shameful given that hot dogs (chilli dogs in particular) are one of my very favourite things, and a good one is hard to find in this town. I still find myself chasing the memory of the great chilli dog they used to sell some 20 years ago at Mr Pizza in Vic Park (now the location of Brando’s)
Run Amuk is open from 11:30am to 9:00pm Tuesday to Sunday. We arrived at around 12:30pm on Saturday, and every table was full. We managed to grab the last one outside, but the customers kept coming. As you can see above, customers were happy enough to wait on the street for their food to arrive (and there was a 20 minute wait at this time).
There are hot dogs to suit all tastes at Run Amuk, even vegetarian if you’re so inclined – you can see the full menu on their website (although be warned, it can be tricky to negotiate on a mobile device). Their bratwurst sausages are made from local ingredients, and everything is very reasonably priced – their “basic” hot dog costs only $9.
Run Amuk has a special chilli dog on the menu in July.
Normally I would have gone for the chilli dog, although I couldn’t resist the “Dare Devil” with jalepeno harissa, baby spinach, caramelised onions, cheddar, habanero chilli sauce, sour cream & fresh green chilli ($14).
I really enjoyed this hot dog, and it’s great to get something with a serious chilli kick from a restaurant. I have a fairly high tolerance for chilli, and I wouldn’t recommend this to everyone – there are other combinations that have some heat in the form of salsa or chutney.
Much to my horror, Renay chose the plainest thing on the menu – “The Brat” with caramelised onions, tomato sauce & American mustard ($9). Boring, but still quite delicious. The bratwurst sausages are 70% pork and 30% beef, and as tasty as you could ask for on a hot dog.
Our friend Andrew chose the “Chili Dawg”, with chilli con carne, guacamole, cheddar, tortilla chips, sour cream and parsley. The chilli con carne wasn’t particularly spicy but this was still a fine dog. The tortilla chips were an unusual addition but added a nice crunch, and helped to hold the whole dog together.
Vicky chose “The Minx” with guacamole, tomato relish, sour cream and a beautifully fresh corn, capsicum, red onion & mint salsa ($12).
Four-year-old Sophie was ordered a “Puppy Dog Meal” with a veal wiener (instead of bratwurst), tomato sauce and fries ($7). Whilst still delicious, the sausage was quite smoky and Sophie didn’t like it – bear this in mind if you’re dining with young and / or fussy children, there are no red frankfurters here.
They must have known I was coming – this beautifully creamy home-made coleslaw ($3) went down very nicely with my chilli extravaganza. The dressing was tangy but not over the top, and the apple was a nice addition.
The other July special was a milkshake made from Reese’s peanut butter cups ($7) This was a beautiful shake, tasting exactly as you would expect with the flavour of peanut butter but without being too strong or salty. Run Amuk also sells home-made lemonade ($5) and “standard” milkshakes (also a very reasonable $5).
We really enjoyed our visit to Run Amuk, I don’t think there’s any question that these are the best hot dogs in Perth. We were very impressed with how organised they were and how quickly the food came out, even though customers were spilling out onto the street.
If you haven’t to Run Amuk yet, you really should make a trip to Fremantle for an outstanding hot dog experience – just choose the time of your visit carefully, or be prepared to wait.
