This wasn’t the best French toast I’ve ever had, but the candied bacon was spectacular. Great coffee ...
I recently had to make an unplanned early weekday morning trip to Margaret River to assist a sick relative, and before turning around and heading back to Perth I took the opportunity to stop for some breakfast (and more importantly a coffee) at The Urban Bean, which is located just a few doors down from the popular Morrie’s Anytime at the edge of the town centre.
Seating is available both inside & outside, and the fitout is comfortable and certainly very colourful. There’s plenty of food to choose from, including cakes & savoury items in the counter fridge. I’m not sure if the “we’re Free from WiFi” statement is a selling point, or a call to the ACCC waiting to happen.
The menu is on the board, as you can see…bonus points for the TARDIS. Breakfast items include muesli, croissants, a breakfast burrito and the usual eggs etc on toast.
Their Five Senses coffee was excellent; very smooth and as good as anything I’d expect to find in Perth.
I chose a special dish of scrambled eggs with vintage cheddar & chives on toasted rye ($12), and added a side of their “Big Red Free Range Ham” ($4.50) which is presumably on their menu as a protest against bacon or just a point of difference. Whilst I applaud them for trying something different, I found the ham flavoursome but way too dry compared to a good old pile of bacon and I wouldn’t have it again. The scrambled eggs were very nice, and thankfully the vintage cheese wasn’t overpowering.
I’m not sure how popular the specials are, but I heard someone trying to describe what I had ordered to another staff member, and by the time I left the board had been scrubbed and there was a new special listed. Weird.
My stop at The Urban Bean was only a short one but it hit the spot when I really needed some sustenance. The food was good, coffee was excellent and the surroundings were light and comfortable. If you’re in the area, and can resist the lure of Morries Anytime, I recommend that you add The Urban Bean to your list of places to visit.
