Mary Street Bakery (situated on the corner of Mary Street & Beaufort Street in Highgate) is the latest creation from the team behind Cantina 663, El Publico and Ace Pizza, and adds to their impressive portfolio of restaurants in the area. As well as offering a wide selection of artisan breads and pastries, the Mary Street Bakery offers breakfast and lunch from 7am daily.
The decor is simple but surprisingly comfortable, and provided great shelter from the rain on a damp Saturday morning. We arrived just after 7am so there were plenty of seats to choose from but it started to fill up quickly, despite the weather.
The coffee was excellent, although my cappuccino was a little cool, even for me.
Renay really enjoyed her latte.
I ordered sous vide free range eggs on buttered toast ($12) with bacon ($5). As you can see, the eggs were perfectly cooked and the generous serve of bacon nice and crunchy.
Breakfast is available all day (7am to 3pm), with choices including boiled eggs with buttered soldiers & tomato chutney ($11), porridge with poached rhubarb & maple syrup ($14), thick cut pork belly with beans, fried egg & kimchi ($20) and of course a selection of baked goods.
Renay chose “Toad in the Hole” ($13), two fried eggs in a bread “ring” with piperade (a dish of capsicum, onions & tomatoes) which was really tasty and excellent value. Being of English decent, this wasn’t the toad in the hole I was expecting…
The toast already came buttered, but we were given these as well which was a nice touch and better than the rock-hard butter often provided at breakfast. We took this lovely French butter home and enjoyed it with the sourdough loaf we bought before we left.
Lunch is served from 11:30am with options such as soup with toast ($13), sardine fritters with roast tomato & fennel ($19), pies and sausage rolls.
We took home some bread and a few cakes, including some beautiful fresh doughnuts. There was plenty to choose from at the time but I imagine things sell out pretty quickly. Service in the restaurant was friendly enough but we found it a little abrupt at the counter.
There’s not a massive selection on offer in the restaurant and I think some would find the menu confusing, but the coffee is excellent and the food is of high quality and very reasonably priced (although try leaving without buying something from the counter!)
Mary Street Bakery isn’t somewhere I’d go for breakfast very week, but it’s open earlier than many places and is a nice change from the usual fare. Recommended.
