Once again, this week was the end of term and time for the culinary arts & hospitality students from the Austral...
I’ve struggled to find somewhere decent to have breakfast around Morley Galleria, Dome is the best of a bad bunch inside – don’t ever, EVER, have breakfast at the Coffee Club – and the offerings at Coventry Village are improving but still a bit dubious. That being said, I was pleasantly surprised to learn of the existence of Cafe Mulberries, located in a group of shops on Progress Street right next to the Galleria.
I had a day off from work today (Friday) and decided to visit Cafe Mulberries for breakfast. Their breakfast menu is quite comprehensive but not at all fussy, so there should be something for everyone. I’d encourage you to look at their surprisingly decent website, which includes photos and other information as well as the breakfast and lunch menus.
The Cafe was quite busy when I arrived at about 8:30am, and most of the people there were waiting for coffee so I had high hopes. Unfortunately, my cappuccino couldn’t be described as anything better than average.
Wow. I ordered the “Farmhouse Breakfast” ($17.50) with scrambled eggs (I saw others with poached eggs and they looked a bit rough) and extra baked beans ($3). There was certainly nothing to complain about with the serving size! There was a generous amount of everything (well, a second hash brown would have been nice but that’s just being greedy). There was two pieces of thick toast under the huge mound of egg which was a nice change. I like scrambled egg in that solid but soft & buttery form, although it was underseasoned and didn’t taste of much. Either the beans or sausage tasted mildly of curry, I couldn’t work out which but it wasn’t overly unpleasant.
Cafe Mulberries is open from 6am to 4pm Monday to Saturday and 7am to 3pm on Sunday, which gets many brownie points in my book; I can’t think of anywhere else I can get a decent breakfast at 6am (and don’t even think of suggesting Fast Eddy’s). Service was friendly and quick, the coffee was disappointing but the food was good, and given the serving size and overall experience I can’t really find anything to complain about and will definitely be going back. Recommended.
