This wasn’t the best French toast I’ve ever had, but the candied bacon was spectacular. Great coffee ...
I was lucky enough to attend the Microsoft TechEd conference on the Gold Coast this week, so Renay decided to tag along and enjoy the change of scene. We stayed at the very nice Meriton Serviced Apartments in Broadbeach, which we chose for its close proximity to the Convention & Exhibition Centre and were pleased to find a good selection of restaurants nearby. One of the closest was Mme Grenouille, a French patisserie and cafe on the outside of the Meriton building.
There are plenty of tables outside, and it’s a nice place to watch the world go by on a beautiful sunny day. The building straight ahead is Jupiter’s Hotel & Casino.
The coffee at Mme Grenouille is excellent (and was surprisingly so at many places in the area). I can’t go past a white chocolate mocha ($4.30), although I rarely see them in Perth – it’s now compulsory that I stop at Hudson’s for a Marble Mocha whenever I go to the domestic airport. (I also couldn’t resist trying a salted caramel mocha at Starbucks here which was gimmicky as you’d expect but actually rather nice).
Biscuits. Now I didn’t order these with my breakfast, they were brought to me free as an apology for a five minute delay on my French toast. And two waiters offered me a complimentary fruit juice as further compensation. I was amazed by the level of service on offer here; I was enjoying the sunshine and there was no real delay to speak of.
Side rant: The general level of service on offer on the Gold Coast is a real eye-opener, and a reminder of the mediocre level we tend to accept in Perth. Last night we had an Indian meal at Oberoi’s Taj, a small restaurant in the local area – the food was great but what set it apart for me was the service, most notably that the waitress asked if we’d like fresh plates after our entree. After many years dining in Perth, I instinctively hang on to my cutlery after the first course in many restaurants to avoid having to eat the main course with my fingers.
And another thing! – you can get quality food of almost any cuisine delivered to your hotel room / apartment in 30-45 minutes. Tonight (busy Friday) we ordered pizza, pasta & ribs which arrived within 30 minutes and was better than most places in Perth could manage (actually the best ribs I’ve had in a long time – thanks Romeo’s).
Back to breakfast – the French toast with bacon ($13.00) was simply fantastic. Easily the best French toast I’ve ever had. Unfortunately I didn’t get to try any of the awesome looking cakes, pastries and macarons filling the counter inside.
If you’re in the general Gold Coast area you probably won’t fall over Mme Grenouille, but if you stay in or near the Meriton Serviced Apartments you should drop in for breakfast, lunch or even just a coffee. Recommended.
