Once again, this week was the end of term and time for the culinary arts & hospitality students from the Austral...
On our recent weekend away in Dunsborough, Renay suggested that we visit The Berry Farm in Margaret River. She’d been there some years before, and knows that I’m fond of berries – blackberries being my favourite – so I was all for it. As well as being a renowned producer of berry-based products, the farm is also home to the The Berry Farm Cottage Cafe, which was originally a group settler’s home circa 1925.
When you arrive, the first destination is the Berry Farm shop which contains all manner of sweet and savoury jams, preserves, chutneys, sauces and salad dressings, as well as wines and spirits produced at the farm.
There’s varieties of jam to suit everyone, from the usual strawberry and raspberry to interesting combinations like apricot & almond, boysenberry & orange and whisky marmalade. I bought raspberry and blackberry & orange.
There’s plenty to taste, and the variety is huge so it’s hard to stop at one! This savoury selection includes chilli jam, shiraz jelly, red wine mustard and piccalilli.
As well as savoury sauces there are berry syrups to pour over ice cream or just enjoy by the spoonful(s).
The whole property is very well established and maintained, and is a delight to walk through. There is disabled parking onsite and good wheelchair access.
The Berry Farm Cottage Cafe serves traditional morning & afternoon teas as well as a selection of lunch items such as soup of the day with crusty bread ($12), scotch fillet steak sandwich ($24), beef & red wine pie with salad or mashed potato ($24), vegetable tart with gourmet side salad ($20), daily specials and a children’s menu.
We decided to sit outside, and as you can see this is a lovely place to sit and watch the world go by (or not!).
I hadn’t tried this local drink before, it’s basically a lemon, lime & bitters without the lime. Not something I’d go out of my way to have again but it was nice and refreshing.
The main event – scones, cream and strawberry jelly ($8). Not the best scones I’ve ever eaten, but the jelly was exceptional.
The warm boysenberry pie with boysenberry coulis and whipped cream ($9.50) was delicious, and would have been even better on a cold, rainy day.
The farm is surrounded by orchards, olive grove, vineyard, farmland, creeks and there’s plenty of wildlife to see in the gardens.
The Berry Farm is not a place you’re going to stumble across by accident as it’s some 14 kilometres out of Margaret River, however if you enjoy berries – or just want a nice cafe meal in beautiful surroundings – it’s well worth a visit if you’re in the area. One km south of Margaret River turn left at Rosa Brook Road, travel 8 km and turn right at Rosa Glen Road, travel 5km and turn left at Bessell Road.
