Chicken Parmy at the Peel Alehouse
My offsider Dave and I had to work today (the Easter Tuesday holiday), and his recommendation for a quick lunch was the Peel Alehouse in Halls Head (a suburb of Mandurah), a popular destination that has recently received a $650,000 facelift.
A look at the “What’s on” page will give you some idea of the kind of venue the Peel Alehouse is – there’s live entertainment, pool and darts competitions in the sports bar, British Pub Night with curry specials and a “kids club” on Sunday afternoons with free face painting and games. Lunch and dinner are served daily and there is a kids menu, senior’s specials and a sports bar menu so just about everyone is catered for. According to the website, over 60 beers are served with 23 of those being on tap. Function facilities and a bottleshop are also available.
The new fitout has created a casual and relaxed atmosphere, but there is also a sense of quality. The furnishings are simple, functional and comfortable. You can choose to eat inside, outside or in the undercover al fresco area shown above.
Menus can be viewed on the website, although they are different to the ones presented to us at lunch today – I suspect the ones online are the dinner menus. The main meals on offer are standard pub fare in the $20-$30 range including fish & chips, pizzas, salads, steak, pasta of the day (today’s was linguine with seafood & spicy tomato sauce) and curry of the day (Thai green chicken). Appetisers, entrees and desserts are also available. Dave and I fancied something simple for lunch so we both chose the “Japanese Chicken Parmy” ($22.50), being chicken parmigiana made with panko breadcrumbs and served with chips & salad.
Our meals arrived very quickly (less than ten minutes) and were the perfect portion size for lunch. The chicken was moist, tomato sauce was fresh and the melted cheese not too greasy. The salad was nicely dressed with a mustard vinaigrette and the chips were okay, although not freshly cut. Nothing to complain about for a quick lunch at this price.
Whilst my visit to the Peel Alehouse was only a short one, I saw enough to be impressed by the decor, atmosphere and food. Apparently it’s packed to the rafters on weekends, which is no surprise. If you’re passing through the area it might be worth a look in – it seems the locals already know how good it is.
