Once again, this week was the end of term and time for the culinary arts & hospitality students from the Austral...
In days gone by I was a regular at Giardini in Leederville for breakfast at least once every weekend, and my quest to find its equal (or better) was my original inspiration – before we knew what “blogging” was – to build a website reviewing Perth breakfast destinations, as there was very little information on the web for hungry folk such as me. All these years later I see that several others have beaten me to it, and now it’s time for me to finally add my two cents worth.
I’ m an unashamed fan of the cooked breakfast – bacon, eggs (poached or scrambled depending on my mood), sausages, hash browns, baked beans & lashings of toast. I find chunks of usually under-grilled tomato pointless, and am yet to find a mushroom that really excites me at breakfast. If this sounds like you and you’re feeling hungry, it’s hard to go past Giardini’s “no lunch breakfast”, which is an accurate description and includes generous servings of all of the above. Its no bargain at $23, but the quality of the ingredients is always top notch, it arrives fast and is well cooked. You get a whole dish of baked beans – not two tablespoons-full in a ramekin – and the toast comes with plenty of butter and a generous selection of Vegemite / peanut butter / preserves.
There are plenty of other interesting options available for the less gluttonous – try the curried scrambled eggs with bacon on the side if you’re feeling adventurous – as well as standard fare such as pancakes and healthy options for people who have no business reading this article.
The service is always friendly, and one thing that always surprised me – and I’m pleased to see that this is still true – is the quality of the coffee. As most of us know only too well, drinking coffee in a restaurant is usually a mistake, but in this case it’s great to see that they’ve taken care with their recruitment and training. (As an aside, my benchmark for great coffee remains Epic Espresso in West Perth, and I’m yet to find better Australia-wide).
I only went to Giardini for dinner once, and was disappointed in all three courses. The variety of food offered in their menu (Italian / Asian etc) is a bit of a giveaway that you’re in for an ordinary meal, and I have seen others make similar comments. If you’re after a decent breakfast with quality coffee, however, then give Giardini a go.
